Summer is coming. Dry skin is characterized by flaky, rough patches and a tight feeling across your nose and cheeks. Skin tends to produce less oil as you age, and dry skin is exacerbated by exposure to wind, sun and cold temperatures. This daily skin care regimen can help you rehydrate your dry skin and prevent further damage.
Wash with a creamy cleanser
A creamy, milky cleanser removes dirt and debris without stripping your skin of much-needed moisture. Use a washcloth to exfoliate gently as you cleanse. You should generally wash your face in the morning and at night, but if your skin is exceptionally dry, skip the morning wash. Splash your face with cool water instead, and pat it dry.
Tone with an alcohol-free toner
The wrong toner is a disaster for dry skin, as it can remove too much oil. Skip toners that contain alcohol, benzoyl peroxide or glycolic acid, which are too harsh for dry skin. Instead, use a water-based version with soothing ingredients like rosewater or cucumber extract.
Moisturize
In the morning, apply a day cream with humectants like glycerin; these add moisture by pulling water from the air. Look for one with an SPF of 15 or higher to prevent sun damage, which further dries your skin and leads to fine lines. If your dry skin is acne-prone, select an oil-free version. In the evening, use a rich, thick night cream that contains firming or wrinkle-fighting ingredients; make sure that the cream is formulated for dry skin.
Apply eye cream
Dry skin is more likely to develop lines and wrinkles, especially in areas where skin is thinnest, such as around your eyes. Gently pat an eye cream on your lids and under your eyes after applying your night cream; do not rub or tug at the skin, as this can lead to damage.
Slick on a hydrating lip balm
If the skin on your cheeks and forehead is dry, your lips are probably parched, too. Use a good lip balm under your lip color and throughout the day. A thin layer of petroleum jelly applied during your evening skin care regimen can repair chapped lips overnight.
Use a hydrating facial mist as necessary
An air-conditioned office or a cold-weather commute may leave your skin parched by lunch. Tuck a hydrating facial mist into your bag, and use it when your skin feels dry or tight throughout the day. These ultra-fine mists are usually compatible with makeup and actually help to set it in place.
This daily skin care regimen for dry skin reduces dullness and flakiness while restoring moisture to parched skin. Always check the labels of your skin care products to ensure that they are compatible with dry skin, and follow this regimen consistently to keep your skin plump and hydrated.
